Home at Last with Dodger (and Terra)
The drive was long and challenging—Dodger was not happy about meeting the girls. At first, I honestly thought my girls would be the ones protesting the new living arrangement. However, that’s not what happened. Instead, Dodger had his own opinions.
Therefore, this wasn’t just an ordinary trip. Before we even started settling into a rhythm, we had to overcome a new kennel arrangement together—leash, close proximity to two new dogs, and three days on the road with everyone kept as controlled as possible. As a result, stress was high for everyone, especially Dodger. His discomfort was clear from the beginning.
Then, during kennel transitions, things got tense in a way that made every moment feel longer. For example, Dodger nipped me while I was trying to get all the dogs tied out safely. Moreover, I also had to deal with peeing on me during kennel transitions—more than I want to remember. Honestly, there was even one blatant moment that felt like, “Oh… I thought you wouldn’t mind!”
At the same time, the girls did a lot right. Instead of crowding him, they kept a wide berth with Dodger. That approach helped, but it also created a bigger logistics challenge. Consequently, potty breaks had to be done separately—because we couldn’t keep everyone in close proximity without raising pressure. Nevertheless, we managed it. We just had to plan carefully and move with intention every time.
Then, finally, we came home.
Once we were back in our routine and in familiar spaces, everything shifted quickly. Immediately, the pressure eased. Soon after, everyone began to unwind—because the stress of the road and forced closeness was gone. As a result, it became obvious that the trip had been the hardest part of the beginning.
The moment things clicked for Dodger
When Terra broke rank with all the excitement and made her way into the outdoor kennel, I watched Dodger closely. Because that’s where his true feelings show, I wasn’t taking anything for granted. Surprisingly, he didn’t escalate or shut down. Instead, his energy changed—quite noticeably. Then, when he followed her in, it was obvious he wasn’t just tolerating her presence—he was actually pleased.
From defensive growls to curiosity, and then to comfort—that kind of shift is one I never take for granted.
A “new companion” that quickly becomes a favorite
What surprised me most wasn’t only that Dodger was okay with Terra. Rather, it was that he seems to enjoy her attention. Over time, he started to engage in the way you hope for—lingering near her and responding to her energy instead of bracing for impact.
In turn, this union looks like a hit. It also shows in the way Dodger is beginning to “share the space” instead of guarding it.
The best news: loyalty to his pack
Most importantly, Dodger’s loyal bond with his new pack is obvious now. He often chooses to spend time in his indoor kennel—close enough to keep an eye on everyone, but not isolating. Therefore, it feels less like “guard mode” and more like “I’m part of this.”
Meanwhile, the outdoor kennel has become his comfort zone. Not only is it a great place for him to play and decompress, but it’s also where he soaks up attention—especially the unlimited belly rub opportunities he clearly appreciates.
What this week means for what’s next
So far, Dodger isn’t just adjusting—he’s choosing. He’s choosing connection, choosing his new life, and doing it on his own timeline. We’re not finished yet, but right now, things are definitely looking promising.
